A Legacy of Giving Since the 1600s
For over four centuries, The Whittlesey Charity has remained committed to nurturing our community through dedicated financial support. What began with gifts of land and property in the 17th century continues today as a vibrant tradition of local giving that touches lives across Whittlesey and surrounding parishes. The Whittlesey Charity provides grants across three key areas, as established in our Charitable Order:
Education
We support learning journeys at every stage of life. Our education grants help individuals from preschool to university and those retraining for new vocations. We also fund external school groups that enrich education and wellbeing, such as Guides, Scouts, and similar organisations that foster development and community spirit among our young people.

Public Purposes
Our community thrives through shared experiences and celebrations. We provide grants to community organisations operating within our area of benefit that enhance the social fabric of Whittlesey. Beneficiaries include cherished local events such as The Straw Bear Festival, Coates Summer Fete, and initiatives by the Christmas Lights Committee, among many others that bring our community together.

Relief In Need
We understand that hardship can affect anyone. Relief in Need grants are available to individuals residing within our area of benefit who are experiencing financial difficulty. These grants aim to alleviate hardship and provide support during challenging times. Applications can be made by individuals or by others on their behalf, and all Relief in Need applications are handled with confidentiality to protect applicant privacy.

Church Support
Since the 1600s, our original charitable scheme established a commitment to supporting the three historic churches of Whittlesey: St Mary's, St Andrew's, and Holy Trinity in Coates. Each year, 13% of our income after expenditure is automatically distributed among these churches (St Mary's and St Andrew's each receive 40%, while Holy Trinity receives 20%). This annual payment reflects our founding commitment to these important community institutions. Other religious groups in our area may apply for support through our Public Purposes grants.
